You may still enjoy the games with your r4 card on 3ds console system 8.1.0-19.However,nintendo latest 3DS system is 9.0.0-20u now.it is a major update this time,and brings with it the addition of themes,so you will be able to customize your 3DS home screen.
Would your r4 card which includes r4i gold 3ds,r4i sdhc rts and others still supports this latest system,I am not so sure about it now.However As for the following new features of the new system,I think it would be better supports it

2.Five themes are pre-installed and additional themes can be purchased from the Theme Shop
3.Themes can be changed by using settings located within the HOME Menu settings
4.A feature has been added that allows users to capture screenshots of their HOME Menu
5.The Nintendo eShop Title Information page has been updated to provide easier access to any available videos, demos, user reviews, and other information
6.Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience
